Summer Safety Series: Choosing the Right Life Jacket

It only takes an adult an average of 60 seconds to drown. But it takes 10 minutes for a strong swimmer to put on a life jacket after entering the water, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

That’s why it’s vitally important to wear your life jacket at all times as you enjoy swimming and boating at Boyer Park & Marina this summer.

Follow this checklist before you go out to make sure your life jacket is up to the task:

My life jacket is…

  • U.S. Coast Guard approved – All life jackets that are U.S. Coast Guard approved have an approval number. Check for yours.
  • The right size – It should not be too large or too small, but fit snugly around your chest with all straps, buckles or zippers secure.
  • In good and serviceable condition – There should be no rips, waterlogging or mildew.
  • Not only stowed on board, but worn – The best lifejacket is one you will wear.
