In Whitman County, we enjoy access to spectacular boating opportunities on the Snake River at locales such as Boyer Park & Marina, about one mile downriver of Lower Granite Lock & Dam.
Many safely boat here year-round by following a few simple guidelines for boater safety near dams.
- Keep your distance. There are several potential hazards associated with boating in close proximity to a dam. These include strong currents, rapidly changing conditions and highly turbulent and cold water that could lead to hypothermia and shock, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Watch the currents as you head upriver near a dam, and obey all signs and buoys marking restricted areas. These areas are strictly off limits for your safety.
- Wear your lifejacket. Wear a flotation device and carry a throw rope.
- Be alert. Use common sense, and pay attention to other vessels and swimmers in the channel.
